Review - The Chronicles of The One Trilogy: Year One, Of Blood and Bone, and The Rise of Magicks by Nora Roberts

Back in January, I featured Year One as one of my Books from the Backlog picks.  Anne from Books of My Heart asked me if I wanted to buddy read the books and I eagerly took her up on the offer.  (See, I do read some of these books that I feature in Books from the Backlog!)  We both enjoyed the first book and decided to work our way through the whole trilogy.  Anne is a much faster listener than I am but that didn't stop our discussions of the books.  All in all, this trilogy was a great listen for both of us and fun buddy reads!

Now on to my mini-reviews...

My Review

This book ended up being my favorite in the trilogy.  I really liked the fact that we got to see everything from the exact moment that the virus started and the world changed forever.  I really felt for the characters as they lost the people that they love to the illness, known as the Doom.  Those that were left had to struggle to survive in an unsafe world.  I really liked the magical system in this world.  There was a fairly large cast of characters introduced in this book but they were all so unique that I had no trouble keeping them straight.  The book had plenty of action and excitement.  Julia Whelan did a fantastic job with the narration which added to my overall enjoyment.

My Review

I really enjoyed this one!  This is a trilogy that really needs to be read in order since this book picks up a few years after the events of the first book.  Fallon has grown up on her family's farm with her brothers and parents, Lana and Simon.  Fallon is fated to be The One and must go away to train with Mallick for two years.  I really enjoyed seeing all of Fallon's abilities develop in this book.  I also really enjoyed seeing her relationship with her family and Mallick.  I thought that this book had plenty of excitement and did a great job of setting the stage for the final book in the trilogy.  Julia Whelan continued to do a wonderful job of bringing this story to life.

My Review

I liked this book quite a bit but I have to admit that I enjoyed the first two books in the trilogy just a bit more.  Fallon has trained and is ready to lead her army in bringing peace to the world.  She is determined to free those who have been held captive and stop groups from targeting individuals with magick.  Everything in the trilogy has been leading to the events in this book.  There are some pretty big battles and a lot of action.  There is even a bit of romance to keep things interesting.  I did think that some things were a bit predictable and I would have appreciated a few more surprises.  Julia Whelan was the ideal narrator for this series and I felt she brought a lot of excitement to the story.

  3. I always have doubts about this series for some reason, so I never really picked the books up. I'm sorry to hear things were a bit predictable in the end, but it sounds like the first two instalment had quite the excitement going on and I'm glad you had a good time with the story :)

  6. It’s been many years since I read anything by Roberts but I remember being intrigued by this series when it first came out because it seemed like such a departure for her. Glad to hear the series was so enjoyable (even if the first two books were stronger).

  10. I need to pick up this trilogy. It's a bit different from her usual and I've been drowning in books so it's slid a bit down the TBR but it sounds so great! Weirdly I find the 3rd book in a Roberts' trilogy is usually my least favorite. Not quite sure why that is but I normally love books 1 and 2 and book 3 is good but not quite as gripping. So glad you enjoyed it and yay to getting books off the backlog!

  11. A series about a virus... it seems quite sensitive at the moment hehe :P But I am glad you could enjoy this trilogy quite a bit. It sounds like it definitely needs to be read in order. I am happy you managed to enjoy them all even if the first two books were definitely the strongest ones for you.
