In the latest thriller in the #1 New York Times bestselling series, homicide detective Eve Dallas investigates a murder with a mysterious motive―and a terrifying weapon.

Pediatrician Kent Abner received the package on a beautiful April morning. Inside was a cheap trinket, a golden egg that could be opened into two halves. When he pried it apart, highly toxic airborne fumes entered his body―and killed him.

After Eve Dallas calls the hazmat team―and undergoes testing to reassure both her and her husband that she hasn’t been exposed―it’s time to look into Dr. Abner’s past and relationships. Not every victim Eve encounters is an angel, but it seems that Abner came pretty close―though he did ruffle some feathers over the years by taking stands for the weak and defenseless. While the lab tries to identify the deadly toxin, Eve hunts for the sender. But when someone else dies in the same grisly manner, it becomes clear that she’s dealing with either a madman―or someone who has a hidden and elusive connection to both victims.
My Review

This was so good!  I hate to admit that I have not read a single book in this series before picking up this one.  I was a little worried that I might be a little lost jumping into a series at the fiftieth book.  I am happy to report that this book does stand on its own and I didn't feel lost at any point in the story.  I am sure that if I had read the previous books in the series, I might have had a deeper understanding and appreciation of the character relationships but the mystery in this book was solid and kept me glued to the pages for the entire book.  I really enjoyed the time that I spent reading this book.

The story opens with Dr. Kent Abner receiving a package that would quickly end his life.  The package contained a golden egg filled with a nerve gas that killed him within minutes.  Lt. Eve Dallas has quite the case on her hands.  It seems that everybody loved Dr. Abner and there just aren't a lot of leads.  She keeps asking questions and checking everything hoping to find something.  When a second murder occurs, the pieces finally start to come together.

This mystery really kept me guessing.  This was a very suspenseful novel and I had a hard time piecing things together before it was revealed within the story.  The story definitely took some twists and turns that I didn't expect and I loved the fact that everything seemed entirely plausible.  I also really liked Eve's approach to solving the case.  She doesn't seem to miss much and is very dedicated to getting justice for the victims.

I really liked the way the book was written.  I thought that there was a really great balance between the case and Eve's personal life which made her feel very real.  The pacing was very well done and there was never a point where I felt the desire to set the book aside.  I thought that the descriptions were very well done and I almost felt like I was seeing everything Eve was as she worked to piece the case together.

I would recommend this book to others.  I thought that this was a very smartly written suspenseful story filled with great characters.  I am very glad that I finally decided to give this series a try and now have plans to go back to the beginning and read more of Eve's adventures.

I received a free ARC of Golden in Death by J.D. Robb from Macmillan in exchange for an honest review.

  9. Oh I finally got this from the library so I could read your review. I really enjoyed this but I have read the 49 previous. You really should go read more from the beginning because there is so much character development. You'll know more inside jokes, too. Plus they are all such great, fun reads!
