Stacking the Shelves #175

I am really excited to participate in Stacking the Shelves, a weekly meme hosted by Tynga's Reviews and Reading Reality.

My Life
I had thought that this would be a quiet week.  I was wrong.  My daughter and I went to an event where we knew she was going to receive an award.  My daughter was really good about trying for every scholarship she could find so we went without really knowing what to expect.  She won third place in her age group in our state, which was great.  The total award was $25.  It was a 5 hour round trip that took up my entire day and that $25 didn't even cover the gas.  I do appreciate the award but am disappointed that it cost so much to actually receive it.  My daughter and I did get a good laugh about it on the way home.

On Sunday, my daughter left for a mission trip for the week so it was just me and my husband.  We received the settlement from the insurance for our van and realized that our plan to wait to replace it wasn't going to make either of us happy.  We spent a lot of time shopping and checking cars out online before deciding on one this week.  Hopefully, this car will not attract drivers trying to play demolition derby on the roads.
Next weekend, we are having a graduation party at our house and I am starting to get nervous just thinking about everything that needs to be done.  We invited more people than our house will hold so I am not sure how this is going to work.   Honestly, I am just ready to have it over.  We are also dealing with our 14-year-old pup, Cookie.  She has dementia, is in kidney failure, and is starting to have quite a few accidents in the house.  I am afraid we will have to make a difficult decision soon but I am trying not to think about it.

I am doing the best I can with the blog.  It doesn't seem to be good enough most weeks but I hope things can slow down soon.

I did a little stocking up on audiobooks.  I actually was able to grab all but one of these for a total cost of $0.99.  I earned a $15 coupon from Audible for listening to the app at least 10 minutes per day for the last two weeks of May.  Kindle Unlimited is currently offering 2 months for $0.99 so I decided to sign up to take advantage of the deals on the companion audiobooks.  So I borrowed 7 books from Kindle Unlimited and added the audio for each for $1.99 using my coupon.  I still have a coupon balance of $1.07 and 7 new audiobooks that cost me next to nothing :)  I did also add one addition audiobook for review, The Pet Set Duet, which sounds really cute.

What books do you add to your shelves this week?

  1. It's a nice car. I hope it brings you many happy miles.

So sorry to hear about Cookie.

I picked up Kill Switch. It's a new technology horror anthology.

  2. Oh man, I'm chuckling about the long drive and the award, but yeah... I get why it was not exactly rewarding.
    Your new wheels look snazzy.
My niece's party was just last week and my poor SIL was ready to break. It all went well, but I think the parents always feel the strain. :)

Wow, great plan to score a nice stack of audiobooks. I still need to sigh up for the latest KU sale before its over.

Hopefully, all will go well for you this week, Carole!

  3. I feel it. Hang in there. That's what I am telling myself with the move and everything happening. I feel badly about not getting around to all the posts and it's not going to get better the next couple weeks.

I have 2 suggestions for the graduation party - outdoor tent or in the garage. I have seen both strategies when someone didn't have the space in the house. Weather could be a factor rain/heat - it wasn't usually too hot in MN in June, actually temps in the 40s were possible!

I am sorry about Cookie. It is part of the deal but not easy.

Good lucking new car and yay for deals on audiobooks. I hope you enjoy them and get a few breaks this week.

  4. I'm sorry to hear about Cookie. Having an older animal is never easy and it's never easy to know when it's time. I'm happy to hear you got another car. Hopefully things will settle down soon for you.

  5. So sorry your dog is struggling. Happy to hear you got a new vehicle. Hope you're enjoying it. And sorry to hear you drove all that way for $25. You'd think they'd just send it to her.

  6. Lots of good and not so great stuff up there. Congratulations on the new car. I love it! Your daughter's award reminds me of when my daughter won the alumni award during her undergraduate years, and didn't actually get anything. She just spoke to perspective students at a local event. We were both scratching our heads about that one. Nice audiobook buys. I loved the Ivy Years books.

  7. So many things happening. Nice that your daughter won. And very nice new ride! I'm sorry to hear about Cookie. My dog, Molly, had similar problems and it's not an easy thing to see coming. I hope the graduation party goes well and then you can find some time to just relax.

  8. The new car looks great! Fingers crossed everything goes well with it. I'm sorry to hear about your dog. This is one of the reasons I struggle with the thought of getting a dog...I get too emotional at the best of times. Sounds to me like you need a holiday to get away from everything!

  9. *Hugs.* Sorry about the pup. My dog turned 11 yesterday, and I’m sad that she’s getting so old. I hope the graduation party is fun, even if it is crowded.

  13. Congrats to your daughter for all she has accomplished but I'm curious, what did they really thing $25.00 was going to cover in the whole scheme of college? I'm a tad confused. I love the new car and will be sending prayers to Cookie. You are all to aware that I know how hard that decision is to make. Hang in there!

  15. Oh too funny (though I would have been frustrated too) about the award. Hopefully you got some quality time with your daughter to make up for it. Congrats about the new car. I don't want to jinx you but my dad bought one of those a couple of years ago after 3 wrecks in 1 year and so far there hasn't even been a scratch in a parking lot. I wish the same to you!

Don't put to much pressure on yourself about the blog. You're doing great! I hope you have a great week and things go better for you.

  16. It is a bit weird that for the award the cost to receive it is more than the prize money! But nonetheless, congratulations to her for the award and the recognition! I hope she enjoys her mission trip and that the graduation party runs smoothly, even though it takes a lot to get it all up and organised <3
