Stacking the Shelves #164

I am really excited to participate in Stacking the Shelves, a weekly meme hosted by Tynga's Reviews and Reading Reality.

My Life

This has been a hard week.  My husband lost his job unexpectedly in the middle of the week.  He had been at his job for 20 years.  I have slept very little since it happened.  I work full time but my salary and benefits aren't anywhere near what my husband has been earning.  I know that this is not the worst thing that could have happened to our family but it has been incredibly stressful.

I spent less time blogging and returning comments this week and more time going over our household budget, helping with a resume, and researching options.  Please have patience with me while we try to get things figured out.

I did have a decent reading week.  I believe that it was the day before my husband's job loss when I approved to read two of my most anticipated books for this year.   I admit that I might have spent some time with Mercy and Adam when I needed to escape life for a while this week.

Books Added
The Master of Dreams by Mike Resnick (Publisher)
The DNA of You and Me by Andrea Rothman (Publisher)

The Storm King by Brendan Duffy (Purchased)
The Death Doll by Brian P. White (Author)
Hit Me by Peter J. Thompson (Audiobook Boom)

Storm Cursed by Patricia Briggs (NetGalley)
Priest of Lies by Peter McLean (NetGalley)

What books do you add to your shelves this week?
Let me know in the comments and be sure to leave a link to your own STS post!

  1. His job of 20 years?! That is a hard blow to take :/ All my best to you

  2. Oh Carole I'm so sorry about your bad news. I can well remember when my dad was sacked while on sick leave and the effect it had on the household. Ironically he got the call sacking him on 9/11 as he watched events unfold on TV. It's terrible that Mr Carole got no warning and that shouldn't be allowed. You're doing the right thing in getting organised with budgets and stuff. I'm keeping everything crossed for him finding a new job quickly *hugs*

  3. I'm so sorry to hear that! That's definitely got to be stressful! Don't worry about blogging and commenting at this time. We totally understand if you're absent for awhile. 20 years, that's a long time and it's sad that he was let go. I know my uncle was let go maybe a year or two ago from his job that he's been working for the company since he was a teenager! I hope things will turn out for you and your family.

At least you got two anticipated reads from Netgalley! That's a nice little bright spot in these troubled times! I hope you enjoy all of your lovely new reads!

My STS will be up tomorrow, so stop by then if you can!

    Have a GREAT day!

  4. I'm so sorry about your husband's job. I've been in the situation when I lost my job a few years ago. You will get through it, but I'm sure it will not be easy. Good luck on the search. Glad you got a few good books in this week. That's a plus.

  5. How awful, Carole! And, yes, you are both allowed to grieve such a loss even if its not the worst. Twenty years is a long time and a sudden, unexpected break like that is traumatic. Mercy and Adam are a good solace.
Prayers for a new job he enjoys to come his way.
No worries about visits. I know your mind and focus need to be on family right now.

    Hugs, Carole!

  6. I’m sorry about your husband’s job. Don’t worry about blogging if other things are more important right now. We’ll be here when you get back. *Hugs*

Aj @ Read All The Things!

  7. I am so sorry Carole. I will pray that this ends up being a blessing. I am sure your husband is shell-shocked.

  8. Geez I'm sorry. That has to be so tough. Hope he finds something quickly! Hope you enjoy your new books and have a better week ahead!

  9. Hope for the best, prepare for the worst. I hope it works out better for you.

I'm also excited about Storm Cursed and wish I could read it, now. I have a few things to read first. Sigh. Good luck this week!

  10. Carole, I am so sorry to hear about your husband, and losing a job after 20 years is tough. ((HUGS)) to you both. I hope he can find something new soon. Good luck!

  11. Oh my gosh I'm sooo sorry to hear that! I went through something similar a few years ago- unexpected company layoffs- and it was a shock! All my thoughts go to you guys!

Sometimes escapism and a good book help us deal with these sudden stresses, I often think.

    Storm Cursed looks amazing!

  12. i am sorry to hear such a sad news. Hope he finds a new one, or maybe start of a new path in life

  13. Oh just finished Storm Cursed! Many things for you and I hope you'll enjoyt hem all. Happy reading!

  14. Oh! The DNA of You and Me is on my list! It looks good. I hope you enjoy it!

  15. So sorry to her about the bad news. That just seems wrong after 20 years.

  16. Oh wow, I am so sorry about your husband. It's so crazy that these things can happen even if you've been somewhere for SO long. I hope that he can find something soon - and something that he actually enjoys too!!

  17. It's horrible to see something like this happen after 20 years. I just know that he'll find something bigger and better. And great that Mercy and Adam could provide some kind of mistake.

  18. Oh Carole I'm so sorry. To have no notice has got to be terrifying. I understand why you haven't gotten much sleep. I hope something even better comes along soon but I know this is such a stressful time. In the meantime enjoy your reading and try and get some rest.

  19. Of course! That is a very sudden thing to have happen and I am so sorry to hear that for you and your husband. I do hope something new and more good comes along soon and that you will be able to sort everything out <3 I hope you can get some good sleep soon x
