Star Wars meets Robin Hood in USA Today bestseller Amanda Bouchet‘s genre-bending, sci-fi/fantasy romance!

Captain Tess Bailey and her ragtag band of thieves are wanted criminals. They steal from the "haves" to give to the "have nots." Even though her heart is in the right place, her actions still get her into trouble – and there's no trouble greater than the dreaded Galactic Overseer Novalight. He commands the brutal military regime that rules the known galaxies, and Tess is always on his radar.

After stealing a top-secret military laboratory and further inciting Novalight's rage, Tess and her crew manage to escape—and miraculously survive. Docked on their new planet, Tess encounters the tall, dark, and haughty bounty hunter Shade Ganavan, who has to decide if he wants to turn them over to the Galactic Overseer and be set for life, or if the real payoff is winning Tess's heart.
My Review

I must say that I ended up enjoying this book quite a bit.  It did take me a while to really get into the story but once I did I had a lot of fun with it.  I was really eager to read this book since I really liked her books from the Kingmaker Chronicles trilogy.  This is the first book in a brand new series that blends science fiction with romance and I think it worked really well.

Tess Bailey and her crew start out this story in a bit of trouble.  They have a stolen lab attached to their ship and are about to be caught.  They take a chance on a risky maneuver to escape and then need to put the pieces back together.  Their ship needs a lot of work and they are wanted by the authorities.  Tess runs into Shade who happens to have the skills to put her ship back together.

I did like the characters in this story quite a bit.  Tess was a bit of a mystery especially as the story started but I liked her more an more as we learned more about her past.  She considers her crew to be her best friends but she has kept her past hidden from even them.  Tess was smart, loyal, and kind, but unsure when it came to Shade.  Shade has been through some things and has made some big mistakes.  I must say that I liked him right away.  He seemed incredibly confident and observant.  He does have a pretty big conflict of interest to contend with and I did enjoy getting the chance to peer into his head as he tried to figure out what he wanted to do.

I really did like Shade and Tess together even though it seemed to take a long time for things to start happening.  I thought that they had great chemistry and their personalities seemed to mesh very nicely together.  I really enjoyed the fact that they had some rather heartwarming scenes, some steamy scenes, some were filled with humor, and some with action.  No matter what kind of scene they were in, it seemed that their characters just made it better because they were working together.  I also really liked seeing the relationships that Tess had with her crew, who were really more like her family than anything.

I would recommend this book to anyone that enjoys romance blended with some lighter science fiction.  I think that this book is a solid first entry in what I expect will be an exciting series.  I cannot wait to read more from Amanda Bouchet!

I received a digital review copy of this book from Sourcebooks Casablanca via Edelweiss.

  1. I was quite curious about this one but was denied when I asked for it. Maybe later!

  2. Glad to see you enjoyed this one, Carole. I still need to read her other series!

    1. I really enjoyed the first two books in her other series but the third book fell a bit flat for me. This was a great start for the new series.

  3. Interesting! I was not keen on her other series, but this one looks good

  4. I was curious about her new series and it sounds like one I'd enjoy. I like that she's not easy to know and has a friends with her shipmates and an interesting relationship starting with Shade.

    1. I hope you get the chance to read this one, Sophia Rose!

  5. I was curious about this one. I listened to her Kingmaker series. I loved the first book, thought the second was okay and liked the third. I'll have to give this one a try. Great review. Happy New Year

    1. I liked the first two books in the Kingmaker series a lot but had a few issues with the third. I thought this one was really well done, Melanie!

  6. I loved this. I think it's better than her first series, although I liked that. I could finally read your review since I wrote my review. I was somehow surprised this was science fiction, somehow I thought it was fantasy again. Anyway I'm glad you enjoyed it. I'm also glad I wasn't the only one who liked Shade right away. He does have that conflict so it could have gone very badly. Anne - Books of My Heart

    1. I knew that this one was going to be science fiction and I loved how different this story was. I am looking forward to more about these characters.

  7. I love the idea of stealing a whole laboratory. That conjures up bizarre images in my mind!

  8. I love the premise of this one being Star Wars meets Robin Hood. I've been enjoying sci-fi a lot lately! And that cover is so intense and flamey which makes me happy. I really like the sound of the romance and the characters. I am glad you could enjoy it even though it took a while to get into.
