This week's neglected book

Sworn to Silence by Linda Castillo

Series: Kate Burkholder #1
Publication Date: June 23, 2009
Publisher: Minotaur Books
A killer is preying on sacred ground....

In the sleepy rural town of Painters Mill, Ohio, the Amish and "English" residents have lived side by side for two centuries. But sixteen years ago, a series of brutal murders shattered the peaceful farming community. In the aftermath of the violence, the town was left with a sense of fragility, a loss of innocence. Kate Burkholder, a young Amish girl, survived the terror of the Slaughterhouse Killer but came away from its brutality with the realization that she no longer belonged with the Amish.

Now, a wealth of experience later, Kate has been asked to return to Painters Mill as Chief of Police. Her Amish roots and big city law enforcement background make her the perfect candidate. She's certain she's come to terms with her past—until the first body is discovered in a snowy field. Kate vows to stop the killer before he strikes again. But to do so, she must betray both her family and her Amish past—and expose a dark secret that could destroy her.

Why did I add Sworn to Silence to my bookshelf?

I bought the Kindle edition of this book back in May 2011.  I actually now own the first seven books in the series but haven't read any of them.  I have a few book hoarding issues to say the least.  I love the sound of this series and it seems to get mostly positive feedback so I have no idea why I haven't started reading it yet.

What are your thoughts? Have you read this book?  Would you recommend it to others?

  1. Oooh very cool. I just picked up an Amish murder mystery for a review.

Haha! Hello fellow hoarder. I just added my Backlog post choice and I have three more books in the series, too. ;)

  2. I haven't read this book, but it does sound like one that I would really enjoy. I'm a series hoarder also :)

I think over the past couple of Backlogs, I've added too books to my purchase list. I'm also adding this one as well.

    1. I always seem to be finding new books that I want to read. It is a never-ending problem!

  3. You own the first seven books and still haven't read the first one? I rarely buy later books in the series unless I've read a few and know I like it. I think I've only done that once, Jill Kismet series by Lilith Saintcrow. I was able to get all but book one from the Half Priced Bookstore. I hope you enjoy once you get a chance to try it.

    1. I have bought a lot of different series without reading any of them. I love catching books on sale and if I am reasonably confident that I will like it, I am prone to buy it. I bought all seven books for just a few dollars each over a span of several years so I won't be out a whole lot if I hate it.

    1. It is really easy to hoard digital books since they don't take up any space.

    1. That's great! My goal is to actually start reading some of the books I am finding neglected on my shelves.

  7. Look on the bright side: (1) you're supporting an author by purchasing 7 books and (b) you've got a treasure awaiting you when you're in the mood for this type of read.

  8. So there's something wrong with having the first 7? I see no problem :) That being said, I hope you enjoy this when you finally do start it!

  9. Hi, Sworn to Silence sounds petrifying and real. I hope you find them interesting when you get around to them. We don't have Amish communities in our area as far as I know but plenty of Hutterite colonies that's for sure. We always see them in the city here in Calgary. They all wear the traditional uniforms in mostly black. The women wear headscarves. They stand out from all others.

  12. I read this one years ago and liked it. I'm surprised I haven't read more in the series! Maybe I shouldn't be though given how many series I am always starting. I should devote a year to catching up on my series reading ...

    1. I could easily devote a year to reading what I already have and completing series that I have started. I have thought about it but my daughter pointed out that I would be setting myself up for failure.

  13. This actually sounds good. Sometimes I shy away from things which seem to religious or cult like. But she's the Chief of Police so she's not in that anymore. But I like law enforcement / mystery / suspense so I would probably enjoy this. Plus maybe I could learn more about the Amish; I'm not sure exactly how to categorize them and maybe it doesn't matter. They have an interesting and worthwhile culture. Anne - Books of My Heart

  14. I have done this too. Bought a bunch of books in a series in still haven't read them. I like the sound of this one. Would be a great movie!

  15. This sounds good- I like the idea of her having to come to terms with her Amish background, and the secrets that are obviously lurking!
