This week's neglected book

A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness

Release Date: February 8, 2011
Publisher: Penguin Books
Book one of the New York Times–bestselling All Souls trilogy—"a wonderfully imaginative grown-up fantasy with all the magic of Harry Potter and Twilight” (People)

Deborah Harkness’s sparkling debut, A Discovery of Witches, has brought her into the spotlight and galvanized fans around the world. In this tale of passion and obsession, Diana Bishop, a young scholar and a descendant of witches, discovers a long-lost and enchanted alchemical manuscript, Ashmole 782, deep in Oxford's Bodleian Library. Its reappearance summons a fantastical underworld, which she navigates with her leading man, vampire geneticist Matthew Clairmont.

Harkness has created a universe to rival those of Anne Rice, Diana Gabaldon, and Elizabeth Kostova, and she adds a scholar's depth to this riveting tale of magic and suspense. The story continues in book two, Shadow of Night, and concludes with The Book of Life.

Why did I add A Discovery of Witches to my bookshelf?

I have had a copy of this book sitting on my Kindle since June 2012 and I have no idea why I haven't read it yet.  I can't blame my review schedule or the pressures of blogging since I have had this book since before I started my blog or writing reviews.  Most of the reviews seem overwhelmingly good for this one but I did note a few reviews that were not quite as enthusiastic.  Anyway, it is a book about witches which is enough to make me want to give it a try!

What are your thoughts? Have you read this book?  Would you recommend it to others?

  1. I would recommend it but it is definitely a book that requires the time and the right mood I'm guessing? Idk it didn't take me long to get into it and enjoy. Although the second book isn't as good.IMO. This meme sounds doable and interesting enough. I stare at my shelf sometimes and look at all the books I choose not to read lol

  2. I think I started this one and DNFed it. I think that decision was based more on it not being my thing than there being anything wrong with it!

  3. I read this book and really enjoyed it. I liked it enough to read book 2 in the trilogy, but I never did get around to reading book 3. The author has a new book (which I don't think is related to this series) coming out in a few weeks.

  7. I don't know if you saw Kimberly's post at Caffeinated Reviewer, but she listed this as one of the books that gave her a book high.

    1. I have seen a few of Kimberly's emails this week but I have kind of been missing in action for the most part. That is good to know Sam!

  8. Oh this series has been on my wish list for awhile. I heard some mixed reviews so I've been a little hesitant but it does look really good!

    1. I hope to at least give it a try at some point. I wonder if I put it off because of some of those mixed reviews.

  9. I loved this and I've read the second book as well. I plan to go on to book 3 but haven't gotten there yet. I will. They are good books, although longish I think. Anne - Books of My Heart

    1. I do remember that they were pretty long. That might have been another reason why I decided to push it off for a while.

  10. I own the first and the third and am always looking for the second one cheap. I've heard pretty good things and I really want to read the first one at least before the series starts.

    1. I almost bought all of the hardcovers at a bookfair a couple of years ago. It looks like I already had them on my Kindle though. I actually had no idea that there was going to be a series.

    1. I might have the first couple. It really does sound like something I would like so I don't know why I haven't started yet.
