Debut author Sally Thorne bursts on the scene with a hilarious and sexy workplace comedy all about that thin, fine line between hate and love.

Nemesis (n.)
1) An opponent or rival whom a person cannot best or overcome.
2) A person's undoing
3) Joshua Templeman

Lucy Hutton has always been certain that the nice girl can get the corner office. She's charming and accommodating and prides herself on being loved by everyone at Bexley & Gamin. Everyone except for coldly efficient, impeccably attired, physically intimidating Joshua Templeman. And the feeling is mutual.

Trapped in a shared office together 40 (ok, 50 or 60) hours a week, they've become entrenched in an addictive, ridiculous never-ending game of one-upmanship. There's the Staring Game. The Mirror Game. The HR Game. Lucy can't let Joshua beat her at anything - especially when a huge new promotion goes up for the taking. If Lucy wins this game, she'll be Joshua's boss. If she loses, she'll resign. So why is she suddenly having steamy dreams about Joshua and dressing for work like she's got a hot date?

After a perfectly innocent elevator ride ends with an earth-shattering kiss, Lucy starts to wonder whether she's got Joshua Templeman all wrong.

Maybe Lucy Hutton doesn't hate Joshua Templeman. And maybe he doesn't hate her either. Or maybe this is just another game.
My Review

This was such a cute story!  I went into this book with extremely high expectations.  I have seen so many 5 star reviews for this book that I just had to give it a try myself and was thrilled to catch it on sale recently at Audible.  I thought it was good and I liked it but I didn't love in the way that some other reviewers did.  Don't get me wrong....this is a great story but it wasn't as mind blowing as I had expected it to be.   I did have a lot of fun with this story and really enjoyed my time listening to it.

Lucy and Joshua work together and are always up against each other.  This story is told from Lucy's point of view and she does look at the world in a very interesting and often funny manner.  Lucy sees Joshua as her nemesis which is why she pays such close attention to everything he does.  When they both are going for the same job, tensions are high since only one of them will get the position.

I loved Lucy and Joshua.  Lucy was a bit naive but I really liked her innocence.  She leads a rather solitary life that really is centered around her job.  Joshua was really easy to love.  He was such a nice guy but didn't always know how to handle Lucy.  It was really obvious how much they cared about each other even before either of them realized it.  They were just so cute together!

I enjoyed Katie Schorr's narration.  I think that her voice was perfect for Lucy's character.  She was able to bring the story to life and added a lot of emotion to her delivery.  I thought that her delivery made the funny parts just a bit funnier and the sweeter moments just a little sweeter.  I ended up listening to this book for hours at a time and had a lot of fun with it.

I would recommend this book to fans of contemporary romance.  I loved the blend of a sweeter romance and humor.  All of the games that Lucy and Joshua played with each other brought a big old smile to my face.  I am very impressed that this is Sally Thorne's first novel and look forward to reading more of her work in the future.

About the Author

Sally Thorne lives in Canberra, Australia and spends her days writing funding submissions and drafting contracts (yawn!) so it’s not surprising that after hours she climbs into colorful fictional worlds of her own creation. She lives with her husband in a house filled with vintage toys, too many cushions, a haunted dollhouse and the world’s sweetest pug. The Hating Game is her first novel.

  1. This book just sounds like so much fun to me! All the competition and romance side of things as well. I know this is a classic situation written before but it sounds like the author brings something new to it and the audiobook voice does too! Glad you could enjoy it in the end :)

  5. I remember this one being a big hit, too. I planned to read it and then just didn't. The cuteness factor would pull me in eventually.

  7. I enjoyed this book a lot (4/5). My favorite thing was Josh. Because we were always in Lucy's head, every little thing revealed about Josh was so much more meaningful.

  9. I'm glad you liked it. I'm one of the people who was hardcore in love with it. I've wanted to reread it, but I'm afraid I won't love it as much. Hopefully Sally will put out another book soon.

  11. This was a top favorite of mine from last year and I have considered getting the audio since I loved it so much. Audio can make or break a book for me - going as far as not being able to recover even when I switch to solely reading. Your thorough review of the audio encourages me. Yet, after listening to a sample and knowing that the author was Australian, I was kind of disappointed that the narrator didn't have an accent. Not a deal-breaker, though.

    1. I didn't know that the author was Australian. It sounded like it was set in Anywhere, USA but I did think that the narrator fit Lucy very well.
