Review - Night of the Living Demon Slayer by Angie Fox

Night of the Living Demon Slayer by Angie Fox
Series:  Demon Slayer #7
Publication Date:  May 31, 2015
Date Read: May 31, 2015

4 Stars!

I thought this book was a whole lot of fun and really ended up enjoying the story.  This is the seventh book in the series so I was a little hesitant to read it without having read any of the previous books but I was able to follow along without any difficulty.  I am sure that if I had read the earlier books in the series I would have known the characters much better and some of their interactions would have had a greater meaning for me but I thought that this book read perfectly fine all on its own.

This book had so much going for it.  I loved the quirky cast of characters.  How can you go wrong with a talking dog, a pet dragon named Flappy, a gang of grandma biker witches, a griffin, and an alligator zombie?  I was a little surprised when the dog, Pirate, started talking but I quickly adjusted and spent a bit of time wondering what my dogs would tell me if they had the chance...I probably don't want to know.  I loved how this world was able to include so much and still feel light and fun.

The action started right away in this novel and loved that this story takes place in the heart of New Orleans.  I could totally envision that this group could blend into the festivities surrounding them.  Once things got started in this story the pace didn't let up until the very end.  I never knew where the story was going and enjoyed every twist and turn that was presented.

I found this book to be a really fun, quick read.  I would recommend this to paranormal fans.  This combination of witches, voodoo, zombies, and more is sure to entertain.  I definitely plan to read the earlier in the books in this series and have noticed that the first book, The Accidental Demon Slayer, is currently free at most retailers, so that sounds like a perfect place to start.

Review - The Shattered Court by M.J. Scott

The Shattered Court by M.J. Scott
Series: The Four Arts #1
Penguin Group Berkley / Signet Romance
Publication Date:  April 28, 2015
Date Read:  May 25, 2015

Goodreads | Amazon | Barnes & Noble

2.5 Stars

I have to admit that I am a little disappointed with this book.  I think that this book had so much potential.  I was excited to read this book and on the surface it appeared that it had everything - magic, witches, and a royal court just to get started.  This book ended up having a lot of problems that overshadowed all of the things that I liked in the story.

I went into this book thinking that it was a YA novel and I was very wrong.  This is NOT a book for teens.  I was actually a little shocked when a sex scene seemed to come out of nowhere near the beginning of the book.  The book is not only about sex but there was enough of it in the story that I really think that this is a book for an adult audience.  Don't get me wrong, this book is not only about sex but there are enough sex scenes to keep things interesting.

My biggest problem with this book is that I was bored for a large portion of the story.  As the story progressed it felt more like a romance novel than anything in the fantasy genre and to be honest it dragged.  Some of the things that I would have loved to see, such as Sophie learning to use her powers with the Domina, didn't get more than a mention in the story and happened completely off the page.  I think that if there had been a larger focus on the magic during the middle of the book instead of romance I would have enjoyed it a lot more.

This book had some things that I really did end up enjoying.  The last section of the book was pretty exciting.  I felt that the ending was a bit of a cliffhanger but not so much that I felt cheated.  I guess a better description would be to say the ending seemed to be setting up the next installment in the series.  I liked the sections of the book that focused on Sophie and Cameron's use of magic and liked when they worked together.  The portals that they used during the first part of the book were interesting.  The overall world building in the story was well done even though the plot dragged during a large part of the story.

Cameron was the most interesting and likeable character in this story.  He really filled the role of romantic hero quite well and seemed to really care for Sophie.  Sophie felt really flat to me for a large portion of the book.  She seemed to just be a pawn going through the motions until the last section of the story.

This is the first book by M.J. Scott that I have had a chance to read.  I do feel really torn about this book and I am not sure whether I will continue with the series at this point.

I received a copy of this book from Penguin Group Berkley / Signet Romance via NetGalley for the purpose of providing an honest review.

Here are just a few books that have just been released that you may want to grab soon:

Delivered Fast by Annabeth Albert

Portland, Oregon, aka Hotlandia, where the coffee shops, restaurants, and bakeries are ready to serve everything piping hot, fresh, and ready to go—like the hard-working, hard-bodied men behind the counters—with no reservations…

Sure, Chris O’Neal has problems. His restaurant is still co-owned by his ex. His flannel-and-tattoos style is making him accidentally trendy. He can’t remember the last time he went out and had fun. Maybe some steaming hot no-strings indulgence won’t hurt.

Then again, maybe it will…

Nowhere But Here by Katie McGarry

An unforgettable new series from acclaimed author Katie McGarry about taking risks, opening your heart and ending up in a place you never imagined possible.

Seventeen-year-old Emily likes her life the way it is: doting parents, good friends, good school in a safe neighborhood. Sure, she's curious about her biological father—the one who chose life in a motorcycle club, the Reign of Terror, over being a parent—but that doesn't mean she wants to be a part of his world. But when a reluctant visit turns to an extended summer vacation among relatives she never knew she had, one thing becomes clear: nothing is what it seems. Not the club, not her secret-keeping father and not Oz, a guy with suck-me-in blue eyes who can help her understand them both.

Oz wants one thing: to join the Reign of Terror. They're the good guys. They protect people. They're…family. And while Emily—the gorgeous and sheltered daughter of the club's most respected member—is in town, he's gonna prove it to her. So when her father asks him to keep her safe from a rival club with a score to settle, Oz knows it's his shot at his dream. What he doesn't count on is that Emily just might turn that dream upside down.

No one wants them to be together. But sometimes the right person is the one you least expect, and the road you fear the most is the one that leads you home.

My Review
4 Stars!

I have to say that this novella is my favorite in the series so far.  I just loved Chris and Lances story.  I am amazed by just how much story Annabeth Albert is able to pack into these short novellas.  It is just so nice to be able to sit down and read such a fulfilling story in such a short amount of time.

This is the third story in the Portland Heat series but there is very little crossover and each story can be read as a stand alone.  This story is told from Chris's point of view.  Chris is in his mid 30s and lives in the apartment above the restaurant that he runs but still owns along with his ex.  Chris just takes life one day at a time but he can't help by notice the new delivery man, Lance.  Lance is in his early 20s.  He isn't easily intimidated and has no problems going for what he wants.  He is interested in Chris and one thing leads to another and suddenly a one night stand turns into so much more.

I loved the chemistry between these two characters.  Some of the scenes were more than a little hot but I also loved the times when they just spent time with each other.  There was a lot of focus on the age difference between the couple but I just don't think 13 years is really that big of an age gap.  My parents had a 10 year age gap which has always seemed perfectly normal to me so what do I know.

I did inwardly groan when this couple had their major conflict in the story.  Any time one person starts making decisions for the other person's best interest without asking what they actually want, things also seem to go wrong.

I would recommend this story to fans of M/M romance.  I thought it was a sweet and sexy quick read.  I definitely plan to read more of Annabeth Albert's work in the future.

I received a copy of this book from Kensington Books via NetGalley for the purpose of providing an honest review.

A little home improvement can go a long way…

Jesse Oliver was a medic in Afghanistan, but back home in Pine Mountain he’s happy to switch gears as the Double Shot bar’s new sous chef. When his apartment floods and his old Army buddy offers the family’s dilapidated lake house as temporary quarters, Jesse thinks a little remodeling on the creaky duplex sounds like a fair return favor. That’s before he sets eyes on the gorgeous woman moving into the other side of the cabin—and discovers she’s his buddy’s kid sister, a.k.a totally off limits.

Kat McMarrin has fought hard for her space, and she’s not too interested in sharing it. Of course, her job as a physical therapist means she won’t see much of Jesse, even if he’s a few thin floorboards away—unless she seeks him out. And with his sculpted body and slow-burn gaze, she might be tempted. Maybe the fixer-upper projects she has planned for the cabin will keep her mind off him. Or maybe her instincts to strip the place down will get out of hand…

Five and a half year old Samantha slept in her white threadbare sheets. Tonight the wind was coming through particularly strong from the cracks in the wooden boards on her window. Her small body shivered.
The door creaked open and her mother entered. Sam had the same blonde hair as her mother. Her eyes were her own though. Changing from blue, to grey, to blue-grey, to green or any combination of these colors seemingly simultaneously. Sandras hand approached her daughters shoulder and she shook her roughly awake. The clock on the wall read three o clock in the morning. Sam rubbed her eyes. Come on! Her mother said as she looked over her shoulder. Get out of bed, now! She grabbed a hammer from the toolbox they kept in Sams room, went to the boarded up window and started tearing the boards to the floor. Wood splintered through the air. Go on. She gestured to the window. Get out. Go.
Sam hesitated for half a second then climbed through. She knew she couldnt ask questions. She got into trouble when she asked questions.
Sandra wiggled through the window; she cursed aloud as the glass cut her shoulder.
Dont try to run away from me! The hoarse shout came from behind them. Sams father. Sam knew what it meant when he was like this.
Sandra pushed Sam into the car, ran to the other side and jumped in. Mommy. Sam said as they went speeding past houses. Whats wrong?
If you must know, your fathers more drunk than usual. He has a gun and he says hes gonna kill us. Satisfied? Sams eyes widened as she looked in the rearview mirror. There was a car right on their tail. Sam stretched in the front seat to see who it was; she recognized the face of her father. Mommy! She yelled. Her mother ignored her. The only reason Im taking you with me is cuz as a single parent with no job I might get some money from the government. Mommy! She yelled again. Otherwise Id just let him kill you. The car stopped, jolted forward and stopped again. Damn it. Were out of gas. Sams mom muttered. Sirens wailed in the background.
            Beside them, Sam heard the screech of tires. Blonder hair hit Sams face as she turned her head toward the noise. In the car beside them her father scooted across the front seats; his eyes wild with rage.  A flash of black came from behind him. Sandra frantically tried to get the car started. Too late. An arm shot out around her neck; holding her fast. Her husband held the shiny black gun to her head and before Sam could scream from the sound, the trigger boomed and her mothers body slumped over on the steering wheel. Deep red blood gushed out of her head forming a pool on the floor. ;
Excerpt #2
Hey! Johns voice echoed through the house. Damn it! Sam grinned to herself; John did the same thing every time he got home from work. Hed swing open the door, scream Hey! then stub his toe on the dark brown wooden coffee table and curse under his breathe. Hed done the same thing every weekend since Sam was fourteen. Thats when he got his part time job at the deli about four blocks away from their house. He kept half of his pay; the other half went to paying the bills.
What are you doin? Matt asked as he walked into their small kitchen/dining room.
Craig and I are making dinner. Which means you and John get to do the dishes.
Matts face fell into a frown, doing dishes was his least favorite chore. His baby fat hadnt all gone away yet, so his face still had that slightly round shape. Matt was a little more pale than the rest of them. His eyes were sky blue and thoughtful. The eyes of a dreamer. He had light brown hair with dirty blonde highlights; it was a little long. When their mom was still alive she would always beg him to get it cut. (He rarely did).
Hey, baby sis! John said as his slightly tan hand messed up Sams hair. Sam grinned an amused and frustrated grin. Baby sis, thats what John always called her. Even though she constantly reminded him he was only about a year older than her.
