Vincent knows he's not the most charming of the Moretti brothers. He prefers brooding to flirting, reading to talking, and he sure as hell isn't about to give into his mother's insistence that he 'settle down with a nice girl.' Luckily, Vincent's gig as one of the NYPD's top homicide detectives keeps him busy. As does his long-time partner, Jill Henley–a tough-as-nails cop with the face of an angel and smart mouth that makes Vincent crazy in all the worst ways.

After six years of working the homicide beat with the tight-lipped Vincent Moretti, Jill figure she knows him better than anyone. Which is not at all. But when their most recent case points to a potential serial-killer situation, the higher-ups send them on a rare undercover mission to a place no NYPD officer dares go: the Upper Eastside.

Now the bureau's most antagonistic set of partners is posing as Mr. and Mrs. Brooks of Park Avenue. Spending 24/7 in the suspect's territory brings them closer and closer to their killer . . . and closer to each other. Soon Vincent and Jill are playing good cop/bad cop in and out of bed, and Jill's falling hard. But can she convince Vincent to give her a shot as partner in life, as well as at the bureau?

My Review

I loved this book!  It was definitely my favorite in the series so far.  There is just something about Vincent and Jill that just makes my heart melt a little bit.  They were meant to be with each other but they have to figure out how to make that happen.  While this book is the third installment in the New York's Finest series, it can easily be read as a stand alone.  Vincent and Jill have appeared in the earlier books in the series but I didn't really feel like I knew them until spending time with them in this book.

The characters in this story were amazing.  Seeing the characters from the previous books was great but I just loved everything about Jill and Vincent.  They are both detectives in the New York Police Department and have been paired up for the past six years.  Jill considers herself to be an adopted member of the Morelli clan and the pair have a great working relationship and easy friendship.  Jill just felt so alive in this story.  She had a lot to give and had decided to try to find some happiness by getting engaged.  Her fiance, Tom, is a genuinely good guy but their relationship lacks some of the magic she is looking for.

Vincent is incredibly guarded.  He has never had a serious relationship and doesn't take chances with his heart.  When he finds out that Jill is engaged, he realizes exactly what she means to him.  Watching him learn how to open up to Jill was heartbreaking at times because I could really feel how hard everything was for him.  I was so glad that Jill was as patient and kind as she was with him and they really proved to be a wonderful couple with a whole lot of chemistry.

The case that Vincent and Jill were working on was incredibly interesting as well.  An elderly actress falls to her death and there are no leads.  It was nice to watch the pair work together because it was almost magical how well they complemented each other.  I thought it was fitting that the case they were working on caused them a lot of difficulty to match the turmoil in their personal lives.  The eventual resolution of the case was very well done.

I would highly recommend this book to fans of contemporary romance.  I am a huge fan of Lauren Layne's writing and this book is an excellent example of her writing.  I plan to continue reading Lauren Layne's work and have my fingers crossed that we will see more of the Morelli's soon.

Waiting on Wednesday #10 - Admiral

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

My Waiting on Wednesday pick is:

Admiral by Sean Danker
Publisher: Penguin Publishing Group - Roc
Publication Date: May 3, 2016

FIRST IN A NEW MILITARY SCIENCE FICTION SERIES

“I was on a dead ship on an unknown planet with three trainees freshly graduated into the Imperial Service. I tried to look on the bright side.”

He is the last to wake. The label on his sleeper pad identifies him as an admiral of the Evagardian Empire—a surprise as much to him as to the three recent recruits now under his command. He wears no uniform, and he is ignorant of military protocol, but the ship’s records confirm he is their superior officer.

Whether he is an Evagardian admiral or a spy will be of little consequence if the crew members all end up dead. They are marooned on a strange world, their ship’s systems are failing one by one—and they are not alone.

Why Am I Waiting?

This one sounds like it has a whole lot of things that I am looking for in a book.  I would think that there will be quite a bit of action and the science fiction part of the plot really appeals to me.  I have seen some rather positive early reviews for this one so I am ready to give it a shot.

What are you waiting for this week?

New Releases - March 29, 2016 #newreleases #newbooks

March 29, 2016

It's Tuesday!  That means it is time to make a little bit of room on the bookshelves, load up your ereader, or make your way to your local library.  In other words - It is time to get your hands on a new book!

Here are just a few books that have just been released that you may want to grab soon:
Nobody But You by Jill Shalvis
Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Kobo | BAM!

My Review

When Jacob was injured in the war, it changed him for life. Now all he wants to do is come home to Cedar Ridge, settle in at his lakeside cabin and get some much-needed peace and quiet. But there's no peace to be had when he finds a spitfire of a woman camping out on his property. Half the time he's not sure whether he wants to spank her or kiss--or maybe both. He's in a dark place and a dark mood, and here's this wildly hot woman who is also funny and light and may be the balm be needs to soothe his aching soul.

Sophie Marren is pretty much penniless after leaving her abusive husband. She doesn't have the money to pay rent or the slip fees for docking the boat where she's been sleeping. She was getting along just perfectly until the good-looking, brooding, I'm-too-sexy-for-myself guy moves into the lake cabin that the slip belongs to. Sure he's hot as the noon sun with those dark lens and even darker 'tude, but god forbid she tie herself to another man who's always telling her what to do. But the more she gets to know Jacob, the more she sees how willing he is to battle for her wounded heart...a battle she might just let him win.

A risk worth taking…

No one would ever accuse Jace Berisha of having an easy life—considering her husband…you know…killed her. But that was then! Now she fights for mighty Viking gods with the spectacular and vicious Crows.

But things are turning very bad, very quickly because a vengeful, ancient goddess has come into the world with just one thing on her mind—ending it. And the only way they can hope to stop her is if the Crows join forces with their one-time enemies, the Protectors. A Viking Clan created to do nothing but kill every Crow they see.

Thankfully, Protector Ski Eriksen is a peace loving kind of guy. Because the woman he is desperately trying to get close to is the beautiful and not-very-chatty Jace. Battling Nordic clans? Unkillable goddesses? Jace’s mean-spirited dog? None of these things would ever get in the way of a true Viking!

One moment of recklessness will change their worlds.

Smart. Responsible. That's seventeen-year-old Breanna's role in her large family, and heaven forbid she put a toe out of line. Until one night of shockingly un-Breanna-like behavior puts her into a vicious cyber-bully's line of fire—and brings fellow senior Thomas "Razor" Turner into her life.

Razor lives for the Reign of Terror motorcycle club, and good girls like Breanna just don't belong. But when he learns she's being blackmailed over a compromising picture of the two of them—a picture that turns one unexpected and beautiful moment into ugliness—he knows it's time to step outside the rules.

And so they make a pact: he'll help her track down her blackmailer, and in return she'll help him seek answers to the mystery that's haunted him—one that not even his club brothers have been willing to discuss. But the more time they spend together, the more their feelings grow. And suddenly they're both walking the edge of discovering who they really are, what they want, and where they're going from here.

My Review

This book was all kinds of wonderful!  I can honestly say that I loved it and was rooting for Sophie and Jacob from the very start.  This story really had a little bit of everything that I like to see in a romance novel and I found myself feeling perfectly content as I turned the pages.  This is the third book in the Cedar Ridge series but each book in the series works perfectly well as a stand alone novel.  This is only the second book by Jill Shalvis that I have read but I am quickly becoming a huge fan.

The characters in this book were wonderful.  Sophie had a lot of spunk and I just loved her immediately.  She is exactly what comes to mind when you think of a fiery redhead.  Life has not been exactly kind to Sophie but she is making the most of what she has left.  She is living on a boat that was her ex-husband's prize possession.  He loved the boat while Sophie hates it.  She is broke and working temp jobs to support herself.

Jacob is on leave from the military.  He left Cedar Ridge and his family 9 years ago.  He hasn't seen any of his siblings in that time including his identical twin, Hud.  He has a lot of relationships to work to repair.  When he comes across Sophie's boat moored at his cabin's dock, he is instantly drawn to her.  I loved so much about Jacob.  He was honest and willing to do what it takes to make things right again.  He has been through a lot during his time in the service and has come out stronger in many ways.

The chemistry between Sophie and Jacob was amazing.  They really are a wonderful couple.  I liked the fact that the barriers to their relationship were really pretty minor.  The main thing that this pair had to do was learn to trust each other and themselves.  They really had to work together to make things work since they both had their own set of barriers.  I loved how their emotions came across in the story in the description of small things like how they looked at each other.

I would highly recommend this book to fans of contemporary romance.  This is a completely believable, entertaining, and sexy story filled with wonderful characters.  I plan to read more from Jill Shalvis very soon starting with the second book in this series, My Kind of Wonderful,  because I really want to read Hudson's story as soon as possible.

I received an advance reader edition of this book from Forever Grand Central Publishing via NetGalley for the purpose of providing an honest review.

He Will Be My Ruin by K.A. Tucker
Atria Books
Publication Date: February 2, 2016
Date Read: February 28, 2016
Source: Library

The USA TODAY bestselling author of the Ten Tiny Breaths and Burying Water series makes her romantic thriller debut with this heartpounding story of a young woman determined to find justice after her best friend’s death, a story pulsing with the “intense, hot, emotional” (Colleen Hoover) writing that exhilarates her legions of fans.

Twenty-eight-year-old Maggie Sparkes arrives in New York City to pack up what’s left of her best friend’s belongings after a suicide that has left everyone stunned. The police have deemed the evidence conclusive: Celine got into bed, downed a bottle of Xanax and a handle of Maker’s Mark, and never woke up. But when Maggie discovers secrets in the childhood lock box hidden in Celine’s apartment, she begins asking questions. Questions about the man Celine fell in love with. The man she never told anyone about, not even Maggie. The man who Celine herself claimed would be her ruin.

On the hunt for answers that will force the police to reopen the case, Maggie uncovers more than she bargained for about Celine’s private life—and inadvertently puts herself on the radar of a killer who will stop at nothing to keep his crimes undiscovered.

My Review

I was completely entertained by this book.  I picked this book up because of all of the great reviews that I had seen floating around the internet.  I felt a little left out at one point since it seemed like everyone but me was reading this book.  I had never read K.A. Tucker before but I decided that this would be as good of a place to start as any so I requested the book from my local library before it was even released.  My library quickly had a copy ready for me and I am happy to say that I enjoyed my first experience in reading this author.

This book was a mystery thriller that really kept me guessing.  I would think that I had everything figured out and knew where things were going only to decide that I had to be wrong a chapter later.  I changed my mind about what direction the story was going at least a dozen times while reading this book.  I think that the fact that this book was completely unpredictable was really one of the biggest strengths of the story.  It was a definite win for me.

I didn't immediately like Maggie.  She is a privileged rich girl who has had things come fairly easy to her.  I did like the fact that she was working and using her money to make the world a better place but she also knew how to use her money to get what she wanted.  I found myself really feeling for Celine who had to work to get ahead in life only to have it end prematurely.  My opinions of the characters changed with each chapter of the book.  I came to understand Maggie a little better and realized that Celine wasn't exactly what she appeared to be.  The secondary characters were great, especially Ruby.

This book held my interest well and I thought that it was very evenly paced.  I did like the overall writing style.  I did find myself really pulled into the mystery surrounding Celine's death.  I was really curious about her life more than anything.  I really enjoyed how Celine's journals helped to tell the story and gave her a voice even after her death.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a mystery that will keep them guessing.  I really enjoyed K.A. Tucker's suspense debut and am looking forward to reading more of her work in the future.

Stacking the Shelves #13

I am really excited to participate in Stacking the Shelves, a weekly meme hosted by Tynga's Reviews

I went a bit crazy this week.  I would say that I lost control but I don't really think I even attempted any control this week.  I actually feel okay about the audiobooks and the digital books that I added this week.  I admit that I probably bought too many print books this week but I don't even care.  Books don't have an expiration date and they don't go back so we will get to them when we can.  I was off a couple of days this week during my teenage daughter's spring break and we had a lot of fun shopping for books together.  Some of the books in the last couple of photos are hers, some are mine, and some are for both of us.  We had fun and didn't spend a lot of money so that is a win in my opinion.

Audiobooks

Menagerie by Rachel Vincent (Purchased)
Pack by Jeaniene Frost (For Review)
The Church of Dead Girls by Stephen Dobyns (For Review)
The Killing Jar by Jennifer Bosworth (For Review)

I was really excited to see Menagerie on sale this week and can't wait to listen to it.  I have already listened to Pack and enjoyed it quite a bit. I plan to listen to the other two books sometime in April.

Digital Books

Good Girl by Lauren Layne (NetGalley - for Review)
Claimed by Rebecca Zanetti (Purchased)
The Wrath and the Dawn by Renee Adieh (Purchased)
Imperfect Chemistry by Mary Frame (Freebie)
Reckless by Maggie Shayne (Freebie)
The Heretic by Joseph Nassise (Freebie)
Dog with a Bone by Hailey Edwards (Freebie)
Charred Heart by Lizzy Ford (Freebie)
The Ruby Brooch by  Katherine Lowry Logan (Freebie)

I only picked up one new ARC to read.  I couldn't pass up Lauren Layne's new book.  I have had the first book in the Rebecca Zanetti series for a while so I grabbed the second one when it was offered as the deal of the day.  When I saw The Wrath and the Dawn for sale, I went ahead and picked it up as well since I have seen some great reviews for that one.

Print Books

Magic in the Blood by Devon Monk (Paperback Swap)
Magic in the Shadows by Devon Monk (Paperback Swap)

I now have the first 4 books in this series in my possession so hopefully I will be able to start reading it soon.

I picked up this big pile of books at my local dollar store.  I am not going to list them all but I am pretty happy with my purchase. 15 brand new books for $15 plus tax - you almost can't beat that!

I felt like I hit the jackpot when I got these books.  I went to the new Goodwill Outlet in my area to take a look around.  Once I starting seeing ARCs for recent books in the bins, I rolled my sleeves up and took a better look.  The books are priced by the inch at this store.  So you just pile your books up like in the photo at the check out and they measure your pile with a ruler.  The books cost 15¢ per inch so all of these books cost less than $6!!

What books do you add to your shelves this week?
Let me know in the comments and be sure to leave a link to your own STS post!
