Waiting on Wednesday #12 - The Lost Girls

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

My Waiting on Wednesday pick is:

The Lost Girls by Heather Young
Publisher: William Morrow
Publication Date: July 26, 2016

A stunning debut novel that examines the price of loyalty, the burden of regret, the meaning of salvation, and the sacrifices we make for those we love, told in the voices of two unforgettable women linked by a decades-old family mystery at a beautiful, decaying lake house.

In the summer of 1935, six-year-old Emily Evans vanishes from her family’s vacation home on a remote Minnesota lake. Her disappearance destroys her mother, who spends the rest of her life at the lake house, hoping in vain that her favorite daughter will walk out of the woods. Emily’s two older sisters stay, too, each keeping her own private, decades-long vigil for the lost child.

Sixty years later Lucy, the quiet and watchful middle sister, lives in the lake house alone. Before she dies, she writes the story of that devastating summer in a notebook that she leaves, along with the house, to the only person to whom it might matter: her grandniece, Justine.

For Justine, the lake house offers a chance to escape her manipulative boyfriend and give her daughters the stable home she never had. But it’s not the sanctuary she hoped for. The long Minnesota winter has begun. The house is cold and dilapidated, the frozen lake is silent and forbidding, and her only neighbor is a strange old man who seems to know more than he’s telling about the summer of 1935.

Soon Justine’s troubled oldest daughter becomes obsessed with Emily’s disappearance, her mother arrives with designs on her inheritance, and the man she left behind launches a dangerous plan to get her back. In a house haunted by the sorrows of the women who came before her, Justine must overcome their tragic legacy if she hopes to save herself and her children.

Why Am I Waiting?
I love a good mystery and like the sound of this one.  I like the idea of the dual timelines in this story with family linking them together.  I really want to know what happened to Emily all those years ago and the impact it has had on future generations.  I actually won a copy of this book on LibraryThing and am eagerly waiting for it to show up at my house.  Let's hope it shows up soon!

What are you waiting for this week?

  3. Oh I'm so torn about this one! I love old mysteries and secrets and people knowing more than they're telling but I'm not sure I can read about the kidnapping of a 6 year old. You read it first and tell me how brutal that part is! I can handle it if it's just mentioned but not if it's the mother's anguish in detail and if something really awful happened to the child. It does sound really good though.

    1. It is surprising but I am not bothered by much at all in books. I will definitely let you know what I think as soon as I get a chance to read it.

  8. I haven't read a mystery book in I-don't-know-how long. I feel like I've never really read one, unless you count JLA's Don't Look Back, which I don't. Maybe this one would be a good place to start...

    Hope you enjoy it!

    1. I haven't read JLA so I have some catching up to do. I used to read a ton of mysteries. I still read a lot but not nearly as many as I did in the past.
